Internet Resources
The internet is an amazing place that seemingly has no boundaries to it. It seems that there is no topic that you can’t use a search engine like google or yahoo to find information about. Unfortunately, there is much of this information that is inaccurate, disguised by a well designed website that gives the curious a false sense of knowledge. Over the years, I’ve looked at many websites for information and guidance in photography. Below I have compiled an alphabetical list and description of those that I have found particularly interesting and helpful. The old story about only believing 10% of what you read applies to the internet even more so. I usually look for trends and reinforcement of information between different sites before I start to make definitive conclusions.
Most have forums where you can register, post and/or ask questions.
Latest news, and in-depth tests with comparisons to competing camera models. The forums are very active, but a lot of rumour mongering(about new cameras, or ones that might be announced and so on).
An excellent site for comparing the sensor characteristics of nearly every DSLR and prosumer camera available. Camera models within, and between manufacturers can be compared by several important categories, such as dynamic range and color sensitivity.
A great site with image posting, and active forums that are quite helpful if there is information you need.
Excellent for the latest photography news and in depth , well designed camera tests with sample images.
A great place for renting gear, now shipping to Canada. A little gem of this site are the articles found at the bottom of the main page. Check out “This lens is soft and other myths”, or “The more things change...”
News, and equipment reviews with a leaning towards the camera as a tool to be used in the field, versus the in depth technical tests of sites such as Imaging Resource and Dpreview. More biased to landscape photography versus wildlife. Also has forums but not as active as some of the others.
A site primarily for those living in southwestern ontario, Canada(where I live!). Image posting and forums.
An excellent site for information and posting nature images. A popular site for posting bird images. Forums are moderated fairly closely to ensure civil conduct, and to avoid superfulous discussions(such rumour spreading).
Latest news, image samples, and some in-depth reviews.
The premiere site for information on Nikon products. Many Nikon camera user books are available. He has a keen and critical eye in evaluating products.
